1. Arm Drop Deepener
A deepener is designed to take a client deeper into hypnosis after they have achieved Conversion.
Some will take the client slightly deeper, such as this Arm Drop Deepener, and some will take them much deeper- such as the Stair Deepener.
The Arm Drop Deepener is a tool you can use as a stand alone, or as an "ending" or "finishing off" of any induction.
You will have received permission before you put your client into Hypnosis, to touch their hand if necessary.
"I am going to pick up your (right or left) wrist and lift it. I don't want you to help me. Please let me do all the work."
(pick up their wrist and lift it about a foot above their leg. If there are distinct arms on the chair which could hurt the elbow when the arm is dropped, you may have to put your other hand under their elbow to protect it or they will be focusing on the possible danger rather than on your words.)
"That's it, just let me do all the work, you just have to let go."
(Swing their arm gently. by the wrist, to be sure they have let go of the control of that arm. The more relaxed or the deeper they are, the looser the arm will be. If the arm is stiff, it will be a sign that they need much more work, such as a PR before they will truly let go. You can repeat your request to just let you do all the work. Then, make your "set up" statement )
" I am going to drop your hand onto your leg. When your hand touches your leg, you will go deeper into the calmness." (if they are an Emotional Suggestible, you would say, "When your hand touches your leg, you can let yourself go deeper into the calmness".)
(Drop their hand from about a foot high. Be sure it is going to hit their leg, not the arm of the chair or anywhere else that might be uncomfortable to them) As the arm hits the leg you can say "Deeper" or "Down" to compound the effect of the Arm Drop. If they were comfortably resting with their arms on the side of a lounger, for example, they may feel awkward with one arm on the lounger and one on their leg. So you can compound the deepener again by saying,
"When I put your hand back onto the arm of the chair you can go even deeper."
(and put the arm back where you first found it.)
2. Stair Deepener
The Stair Deepener is what we consider a major deepener. It is written in direct, literal language.
Remember to make it allowing and permissive for the inferential listener.
"I would like you now to find yourself standing at the top of a flight of 10 well-lit, wide and safe stairs. There is a sturdy handrail on this staircase and it leads down to a ____________________" ( this could be a garden, a meditation room, a quiet beach, a forest meadow - whatever would appeal to your client).
(Never take them down the stairs without telling them what is at the bottom. It is a good idea to talk about the fact that this is their place, nobody there but them, and it is a safe place for them. If a client had a bad abreaction you didn’t know how to handle, you could guide them back into their safe place quickly and easily so they can feel good again before exiting them. Never bring a client out of hypnosis during an abreaction. Bring them back to their center core safe place or this safe place first.)
"Each of these steps will take you much deeper into the calmness. Each of these steps will take you even 5x deeper into that lovely deep state of hypnosis." (For the Emotional you might say, “You can choose to let each of those steps take you 5x deeper into the calmness. Each time you take a step down you can let yourself go …..even more.”)
"Let’s begin to move down now, from Step 10, DOWWWNNN to step 9….. 5…. times …..deeper…into the calmness."
(Always tell a client what they are going down into. Down into the calmness, deeper down into hypnosis, deep into the peaceful feeling….)
"Step 9 now, DOWNN to step 8....... Deeper into that calmness."
(ETC, ETC, until they get to step 1, and then down into their ______________(restful place) IF done slowly, and with lots of descriptive language, the client will be in a nice state of somnambulism when you get to the bottom of the stairs. Use major deepeners such as stairs, elevators, escalators, and waterslides- after your PR, or instead of a PR, and before your Therapy.
